The Gstaad Yacht Club’s Centenary Trophy 2022
welcomes rookies and aficionados
There will be new entrants as well as well-experienced crews and boats lining up for the 11th edition of the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy on 29th September, at the Voiles de Saint Tropez.
“The Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy is one of the highlights of the Voiles de Saint- Tropez Challenge Day. It was the famous Swiss Club that launched the original idea, more than 10 years ago, of organising the very first regatta reserved for boats over a hundred years old during the “Dèfi” day on Thursday, and it is with great pleasure that the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez has put its teams to work. This event also allows us to see boats that are usually in different categories because of their size or their rigs sailing together, but the format of the event – the pursuit race – gives everyone a chance and allows us to know the winner as soon as they cross the finish line.” declared Pierre Roinson, president of the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, who also reminded that 2022 will also mark another important anniversary for the club as this year the Société Nautique is celebrating its 160th birthday. The Centenary Trophy is raced in a pursuit format with staggered starts, that has proved extremely attractive for the sailors and the public alike over the years, using an especially created and constantly refined handicap system, allowing very different boats in size and rig to compete on equal terms.
After a most successful 10th anniversary edition in 2021, the regatta is back this year with the usual mix of aficionados and new entrants, Madcap is the oldest boat in the fleet this year, despite being a rookie to the event. She’s the most senior and only original surviving example of pilot cutter, built by Davis & Plain in Cardiff, in 1874. Another newbie to the race is Shenandoah of Sark, the imposing three-masted schooner that with her 55 metres is the biggest yacht of the fleet. Shenandoah of Sark was designed by American Theodore Ferris and launched in 1902. Her story is very interesting, having been seized twice – once during WW I by the British Navy and again in the 60’s by the French customs- and being owned by British and Italian aristocrats, as well as by famous Baron Marcel Bich. Her current interiors were designed by Italian archistar Gae Aulenti and even feature a baby grand piano!
Kismet (1898) and Sumurun (1914) are the two centenarians built by William Fife & Son that will race their third edition.“The Centenary Trophy is a great concept. I’m looking forward to taking part again this year, it will be my fourth time. The organisation is great, the reception was also perfect last year. All the conditions are there, thanks to the Gsaad Yacht Club, to make it a very nice event.” explained Alain Moatti, owner of Sumurun and member of the GYC. On the starting line just off Saint Tropez, there will also be two boats that have participated seven times to the regatta and will score a record eight time: the gaff ketch Veronique (1907) and 2021 winner Olympian (1913), one of the three P-Class gaff cutters that race regularly in the Med.

The Centenarian Award The Centenarian of the Year Award, organised by Classic Boat magazine and the Gstaad Yacht Club, was launched in 2017. Any boat of 100 years or more, which is still sailed in a largely authentic way, is eligible. The independent panel of judges considers any kind of sail boat, including cruising boats, race yachts and former work boats. Each boat should have achieved something significant in the past year, be it a long cruise, a race win, a major restoration or something else noteworthy. The winner is announced at the annual Classic Boat Awards, held at the Royal Thames Yacht Club in London and awarded with a Sterling Silver Cup, sponsored by Robbe & Berking Silver manufacturer. The 2022 winner is Firefly, a Gaff Yawl dated from 1922, designed by Albert Strange (#119) and later modified by Harrison Butler to a Yawl Rig with her draught reduced for use on the Norfolk Broads (U.K.) as per the wish of her first owner, Robert Lamb. She was originally built as an auxiliary sloop in a way to cope with being beached in mudflats of estuaries. Firefly is owned by the Clay Family since 1934, passing her from one generation to the following, a rare example of long-term ownership. You may view the 2022 Centenarian Award nominees HERE.

The Gstaad Yacht Club
The Gstaad Yacht Club was founded in 1998 by a group of sailor enthusiasts with the vision to “create a unique global yacht club away from the waters, instead of another local club by the waters”.
Based in the Swiss mountains and in the beginning, very often acknowledged with surprise, the GYC developed to a club with more than 400 members from over 35 different countries and to a place where members and their guests love to meet. The GYC supports sailing projects on all levels from juniors to professional sailors. The club has become a solid force on the Swiss sailing scene, especially among Olympic sailing and internationally among the classic yachts.
Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez
With more than 600 members and organizing fifteen events including the Voiles de Saint-Tropez, the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez is one of the oldest clubs in France, its origins date back to 1862. Since 2015, the merger of sailing clubs of Saint-Tropez (formerly UST Sailing and SNST) helped to broaden the horizons. Located in two beautiful places, the Club includes several centres of nautical activities: Sailing competition, sailing school and Motor Yachting.

Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy
Elégance centenaire au programme du Centenary Trophy
Parmi les concurrents attendus sur la 11ème édition du Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy, qui se déroulera le jeudi 29 septembre prochain lors des Voiles de Saint-Tropez, on retrouve de tous jeunes centenaires qui prendront le départ pour la première fois aux côtés des fidèles de l’événement.
C’est en 2011 que le Gstaad Yacht Club a lancé l’idée de réunir en méditerranée les bateaux centenaires. Au fil des ans, les plus élégants yachts classiques centenaires et les plus performants sont venues prendre part à la régate. Le Centernary Trophy est le rendez-vous incontournable des yachts de plus de cent ans aux Voiles de Saint-Tropez. La course se dispute sous le format de la « pursuit race » (les bateaux franchissent la ligne de départ en fonction de leur rating, le premier à franchir la ligne d’arrivée est le vainqueur), ce format permet aux concurrents de régater sur un pied d’égalité.
« Le Trophée des Centenaires du Gstaad Yacht Club est l’un des temps forts de la journée des défis des Voiles de Saint-Tropez. C’est le célèbre Club Suisse qui a lancé l’idée originale, il y a plus de 10 ans, d’organiser la toute première régate réservée aux bateaux de plus de cent ans d’âge pendant la journée du jeudi, et c’est avec grand plaisir que la Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez a mis ses équipes à contribution. Cette épreuve permet en outre de voir naviguer ensemble des bateaux qui sont habituellement dans des catégories différentes en raison de leurs tailles ou de leurs gréements, mais le format de l’épreuve – la poursuite race – donne à chacun sa chance et permet de connaitre le vainqueur dès le franchissement de la ligne d’arrivée » confie Pierre Roinson, président de la Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, qui précise que 2022 marquera également un autre anniversaire important pour le club puisque la Société Nautique fête cette année son 160ème anniversaire.
Après une très belle édition anniversaire l’an dernier, le Centenary Trophy revient cette année avec toujours plus de centnaires. Le plus ancien concurrent du Centenary Trophy MadCap prendra la départ pour la première fois. MadCap est le plus ancien côtre pilote connu au monde, toujours en état de naviguer, il a été construit par Davis & Plain à Cardiff en 1874. En 2018 il a été restauré avec le concours des acteurs économiques du Port de Commerce de La Rochelle. Shenandoah of Sark coupera également la ligne de départ du Centenary Trophy pour la première fois. Avec ses trois mâts et ses 55 mètres, Shenandoah of Sark sera le plus grand yacht de cette édition. Il a été conçu par l’Américain Theodore Ferris et construit en 1902. Son histoire est très intéressante, puisqu’il a été saisi deux fois : une fois pendant la première guerre mondiale par la marine britannique et une autre fois dans les années 60 par les douanes françaises – Il a souvent changé de propriétaire parmi lesquels des aristocrates britanniques et italiens, ainsi qu’au célèbre baron Marcel Bich. Ses intérieurs actuels ont été conçus par l’architecte italien Gae Aulenti et comprennent même un piano à queue !
Kismet (1898) et Sumurun (1914) sont deux centenaires construits par William Fife & Son qui seront présents et participeront une nouvelle fois au Centenary Trophy. « C’est une très bonne idée d’organiser le Centenary Trophy. Je me réjouis d’y prendre part encore cette année, ce sera ma 4ème participation. L’organisation est super, la réception était également parfaite l’an dernier. Toutes les conditions sont réunies grâce aux Yacht Club de Gsaad pour que ce soit un très bel événement » Alain Moatti, propriétaire de Sumurun. Le triple vainqueur du Centenary Trophy Olympian (1913) et Véronique (1907) seront quant à eux présents sur la ligne pour la septième fois. Le « Centenarian Award »
Le prix du centenaire « Centenarian Award » de l’année, organisé par le magazine Classic Boat et le Gstaad Yacht Club, a été créé en 2017. Tous les bateaux de 100 ans et plus, qui naviguent encore sont éligibles. Chaque bateau doit avoir réalisé quelque chose d’important au cours de l’année écoulée, qu’il s’agisse d’une longue croisière, d’une victoire en course, d’une restauration majeure ou de tout autre événement remarquable
Le gagnant est annoncé lors de la cérémonie annuelle des Classic Boat Awards, qui se tient au Royal Thames Yacht Club de Londres, le vainqueur reçoit une coupe en argent Sterling, offert par Robbe & Berking. La coupe, réalisée dans le style Bauhaus (1919-1933), incarne une simplicité exprimée par des matériaux précieux avec une esthétique épurée et moderne.
Le vainqueur de l’édition 2022 est Firefly (1922), conçue par Albert Strange et modifiée par Harrison Butler, selon le souhait de son premier propriétaire Robert Lamb, pour devenir une yole avec un tirant d’eau réduit pour être utilisée dans les Norfolk Broads (Royaume-Uni) .
Firefly appartient à la famille Clay depuis 1934, il se transmet de génération en génération, une belle histoire.
