Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy 2023: A classic for classics.
Organizers are setting up to welcome crews and boats lining up for the 12th edition of the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy on October 5th, at the Voiles de Saint Tropez
Back in 2011 the Gstaad Yacht Club launched a regatta, unique in its genre, reserved to boats that are one hundred or more years old, and over the years, the Centenary Trophy has grown to become a familiar “rendez-vous” at the Voiles de Saint Tropez.
“The Gstaad Yacht Club was founded in 1998 by a group of sailor enthusiasts with the vision to “create a unique global yacht club away from the waters, instead of another local club by the waters.” With sailing projects on all levels from juniors to professional sailors and the launch of the Centenary Trophy regatta in 2011 it has become a key actor on the Swiss sailing scene and in classic yachting. “I’ve just visited my friend Pierre Roinson, President of the SNST and it’s with great pleasure and sure to have fun that we come back every year to admire these magnificent boats. this 12th edition will be no different. Plus, the GYC is celebrating its 25th anniversary as do the Voiles de Saint Tropez, so the occasion is just perfect.” Declared Manrico Iachia, Commodore of the Gstaad Yacht Club.
The Centenary Trophy is raced in a pursuit format with staggered starts, that has proved extremely attractive for the sailors and the public alike over the years, using a specially created and constantly refined handicap system, allowing very different boats in size and rig to compete on equal terms.
As explains one of the most enthusiastic international ambassadors of the regatta, French skipper and classic yachting lover Bruno Troublé: “I’ve taken part in the Centenary Trophy many times, and it’s fantastic! The concept is absolutely brilliant because the boat’s handicap is taken into account at the start and not at the finish, which changes everything. You know when you cross the finish line who the winner is. I have a particular fondness for this regatta organised by the Gstaad Yacht Club, which I won aboard the ClassP Olympian (1910). It’s a really great event!”
After a most successful 11th edition in 2022, the regatta will be back this year with the usual mix of aficionados and newcomers, as well as many of the past winners of the Trophy, like last year champion Kismet (1898). On the starting line just off Saint Tropez, there will also be two boats that have participated eight times to the regatta and will score a record ninth time: the gaff ketch Veronique (1907) and 2021 winner Olympian (1913), one of the three P-Class gaff cutters that race regularly in the Med.
This year’s “rookie” will be right on time, having turned centenarian in 2023. Italian flagged Barbara is a Marconi yawl designed in 1923 by Charles Ernest Nicholson and built at Camper & Nicholsons shipyard in Gosport, UK.
“I don’t feel like the owner,” says Florentine Roberto Olivieri “but rather the guardian of this jewel to be known and passed on to future generations. It is the first time that we will take part in the Centenary Trophy. We are very impressed by the welcoming reception and the impeccable organization of Gstaad Yacht Club. I love the innovative formula of racing with staggered starts and the finish in real time. We are very happy to be lining up for it, and I hope in the next years to have all the centenarians in the same location, that will make for an amazing floating museum. These boats have a soul that can be better understood by seeing them”.
Besides being a regular feature on classic yachts events, in recent years Barbara has also been promoting social initiatives and environmental sustainability, to the likes of the (Re) inspiration project about cystic fibrosis, and the the Frisbi Energia project, for the reduction of plastic and a conscious use of renewable energy.
Organizers are also working on the social activities ashore, to make sure the Centenary Trophy is fun too. On the menu a Swiss Night, at the Renaissance Cinéma in the historic Place des Lices on Wednesday where the Centenary Crew members will have the chance to taste the specialties from the Alps but also put their abilities to the test in a very Swiss activity…

The Gstaad Yacht Club was founded in 1998 by a group of sailor enthusiasts with the vision to “create a unique global yacht club away from the waters, instead of another local club by the waters”. Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez
Dating back to 1862, the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the world and possibly the second oldest in France. Sailors from all over the world have always enjoyed sailing and challenging each other in the idyllic Gulf of Saint-Tropez.

Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy 2023: Une classique pour les Classics
Les organisateurs du Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy se préparent dès à présent à accueillir les équipages et les magnifiques yachts centenaires en lice pour la 12ème édition qui se déroulera le jeudi 5 octobre, aux Voiles de Saint-Tropez.
En effet, c’est en 2011 que le Yacht Club de Gstaad a lancé l’idée de réunir en Méditerranée les bateaux centenaires. Au fil des ans, le Centenary Trophy est devenu « La course » incontournable pour les yachts centenaires pendant les Voiles de Saint-Tropez.
« Le Gstaad Yacht Club, célèbre ses 25 ans cette année, il a été fondé en 1998 par un groupe de marin passionné avec pour mission de « créer un yacht club unique et global loin de l’eau et non pas un autre yacht club local près de la mer ». Basé dans les Alpes suisse, le Gstaad Yacht Club compte 400 membres de plus de 30 pays différents. En 2011, le Gstaad Yacht Club organise pour la première fois le Centenary Trophy, il devient alors un acteur majeur de la voile en Suisse. J’ai visité mon ami Pierre Roinson, président de la SNST récemment et nous revenons, cette année, sur Voiles de Saint-Tropez qui fêteront leurs 25 ans tout comme notre club. La 12ème édition du Centenary Trophy promet d’être une nouvelle fois conviviale et sportive, quel plaisir de pouvoir admirer ces magnifiques bateaux dans le golfe de Saint-Tropez », déclare Manrico Iachia, Commodore du Gstaad Yacht Club.
La course se dispute sous le format de la « pursuit race » (les bateaux franchissent la ligne de départ en fonction de leur rating, le premier à franchir la ligne d’arrivée est le vainqueur), ce format permet aux concurrents de régater sur un pied d’égalité.
« J’ai participé de nombreuses fois au Centenary Trophy, c’est formidable ! Le concept est absolument génial car on prend en compte le handicap du bateau au départ et non à l’arrivée, ça change tout, on sait quand on franchit la ligne d’arrivée qui est le vainqueur. J’ai une attache particulière pour cette régate organisée par le Yacht Club de Gstaad que j’ai gagnée à bord du ClassP Olympian (1913). C’est une épreuve vraiment sympa » confie Bruno Troublé.
Après une très belle 11ème édition en 2022, la version 2023 du Centenary Trophy accueillera les fidèles de la régate, qui viennent pour défendre ou reconquérir le Trophée, comme le vainqueur de l’an dernier Kismet (1898), le triple vainqueur le Class P Olympian (1913) qui revient par sa neuvième participation – un record qu’il partagera sur la ligne de départ avec Veronique (1907).
Un seul nouveau venu pour cette 12ème édition, le yawl Marconi Barbara qui célèbre cette année ses 100 ans. Barbara a été conçu en 1923 par Charles Ernest Nicholson et construit au chantier naval Camper & Nicholsons de Gosport, au Royaume-Uni, il navigue actuellement sous pavillon italien.
« Je ne me sens pas propriétaire », confie le Florentin Roberto Olivieri, « mais plutôt comme le gardien de ce joyau qui doit être mis en avant et transmis aux générations futures. C’est la première fois que nous participons au Centenary Trophy. Nous sommes très impressionnés par l’accueil et l’organisation impeccable du Gstaad Yacht Club. J’aime la formule innovante de la course avec des départs décalés et l’arrivée en temps réel. Nous sommes très heureux de nous aligner et j’espère que dans les années à venir, tous les centenaires se retrouveront au même endroit, ce qui constituera un incroyable musée flottant. Ces bateaux ont une âme que l’on peut mieux comprendre en les voyant ».
En plus de son engagement sur les régates de yachts classiques, Barbara soutient des initiatives sociales et pour la protection de l’environnement, comme le projet (Re) inspiration pour la mucoviscidose, et le projet Frisbi Energia, pour la réduction du plastique et l’utilisation consciente de l’énergie renouvelable.
Le Gstaad Yacht Club travaille également sur des animations festives et ludiques à terre, pour faire en sorte que le Centenary Trophy soit aussi amusant. Au programme, une soirée suisse, place des Lices, le mercredi, où tous les marins des bateaux centenaires auront l’occasion de goûter aux spécialités des Alpes, mais aussi de se confronter dans une activité très suisse…
