22 centenarians awaited for the 13th Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy
They’ve all arrived in Saint-Tropez for the Voiles de Saint-Tropez. On Thursday 3 October, for the traditional Voiles de Saint-Tropez challenge day, twenty-two competitors will cross the start line of the 13th edition of the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy. The spectacle promises to be exceptional once again for this unique race that everyone is looking forward to. Tomorrow, Wednesday 2 October, all the crews will be on the Place des Lices for a Swiss night full of surprises.
The Gstaad Yacht Club is proud to be organising the 13th edition of the Centenary Trophy once again in partnership with the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez during the Voiles de Saint-Tropez. Throughout the year, we have worked hard in collaboration with the SNST (Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez) to make this regatta, which brings together the finest centenary boats, an event in the friendly spirit of Les Voiles’, said Daniel Heine, Gstaad Yacht Club sailing officer.
Beautiful centenaries for a unique race
As it has every year since its creation in 2011, the Centenary Trophy will be contested under the ‘pursuit race’ format: the boats cross the start line at a specific time according to their rating, and the first to cross the finish line is the winner. This race format allows competitors to race on an equal footing.
‘We love being here in Saint-Tropez and taking part in the Centenary Trophy, and if we could, we’d come back every year,’ added Jan Peter Andersen, who sails Thea.
The two magnificent 15m JI, Mariska (William Fife III 1908), and the flagship of the Yacht Club de Monaco, Tuiga (William Fife III 1909) will once again be on the starting line of the Centenary Trophy.
‘For the crew of Mariska, taking part in the Centenary Trophy is a must. We’re also in Saint-Tropez to take part in this challenge organised by the Gstaad Yacht Club,’ says Manon Bajart, captain of Mariska.
‘We’re very happy to take part in this regatta every year with all the hundred-year-old boats. The fact that we’re starting according to our rating is really a great idea, it’s a format that we don’t have in other races. For Tuiga, it’s good because we’ve got all our rivals ahead of us and we have to do everything we can to catch them. Often it’s the other way round for us,’ adds Daniel Pereira, skipper of Tuiga.
The start will be given on Thursday 3 October at 12:30 for the first boat.
Lulu (1897) will once again be the oldest centenarian at the start, while Arrow (1924) will be the youngest.
‘Swiss Night’, Place des Lices
On Wednesday October 2, all the competitors will gather at the Place des Lices for ‘Swiss Night’. For the third year running, the Gstaad Yacht Club is putting Switzerland in the spotlight in Saint-Tropez. On the programme: tasting of Alpine specialities and very Swiss activities… a ‘cow milking’ competition and an original ski race….
The Trophy itself
The Centenary Trophy, awarded each year during the Trophy Giving Owners dinner, is also a centenarian, created by Wakely and Wheeler in London in 1911, exactly 100 years before the first edition of the regatta.

The Gstaad Yacht Club
The Gstaad Yacht Club (GYC) was founded in 1998 by a group of sailing enthusiasts with the vision of creating “a unique, global yacht club off the water, instead of another local club on the water”. Located in the Swiss Alpes, and initially often met with astonishment, the Gstaad Yacht Club has developed into a club with 400 members from over 40 different countries and a place where members and their guests enjoy meeting. Since 2011, topics relating to the protection of the oceans and waters as well as other themes relating to sustainability and the well-being of our environment have been an integral part of club life, enriched by collaborations and events such as with Sylvia Earle, the Blue Marine Foundation, IUCN Ocean Ambassador William Winram and the Gstaad Cultural Encounters.
Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez
Founded in 1862, the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez has been organizing regattas for over 160 years.
Some of its members have left an indelible mark, such as Guy de Maupassant in 1887 and Paul Signac in 1897 (President of the SNST from 1908 to 1911), who are among the pioneers of French yachting. Affiliated with the FFVoile and an allied club of the Yacht Club de France, the SNST has continued to grow with the motto of always being open to modernity and new ideas while respecting tradition.
With a team of enthusiasts, including 15 board members, 3 permanent staff, 500 members, and many volunteers, the club organizes major events such as Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, the ArMeN Festival, Les Dames de Saint-Tropez, Les Voiles d’automne, and the Paprec 600 Saint-Tropez offshore race, and co-organizes other events like the Loro Piana Giraglia in Saint-Tropez. The SNST hosts exceptional events, including various world championships and since 2021, the French leg of the Sail GP, as well as a leg of the 52 Super Series circuit for the TP 52, which will return to Saint-Tropez in 2025. The Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez is the supporting club of the French Orient Express Team for the 37th America’s Cup, which will take place in September and October 2024 in Barcelona.

22 yachts centenaires attendus sur le Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy
Ils sont tous arrivés à Saint-Tropez pour les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. Jeudi 3 octobre, pour la traditionnelle journée des défis des Voiles de Saint- Tropez, ils seront vingt-deux concurrents à couper la ligne de départ de la 13ème édition du Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy. Le spectacle promet d’être une nouvelle fois exceptionnel pour cette course unique en son genre que tous attendent avec impatience. Demain, mercredi 2 octobre, c’est sur la place des Lices que tous les équipages ont rendez-vous pour une « Swiss night » pleine de surprises.
« Le Gstaad Yacht Club est fier d’organiser la 13ème édition du Centenary Trophy une nouvelle fois en partenariat avec la Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez lors des Voiles de Saint-Tropez. Tout au long de l’année, nous avons travaillé dur en collaboration avec la SNST (Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez) pour faire de cette régate, qui regroupe les plus beaux bateaux centenaires, un événement dans l’esprit convivial des Voiles », a déclaré Daniel Heine, Gstaad Yacht Club sailing officer.
Des centenaires de toute beauté pour une course unique
Comme tous les ans depuis sa création en 2011, le Centenary Trophy se disputera sous le format de la « pursuit race » : les bateaux franchissent alors la ligne de départ à une heure précise en fonction de leur rating et le premier à franchir la ligne d’arrivée est le vainqueur. Ce format de course permet aux concurrents de régater sur un pied d’égalité.
« Nous adorons être ici à Saint-Tropez et participer au Centenary Trophy, si nous le pouvions nous reviendrions chaque année », a ajouté de son côté Jan Peter Andersen, qui navigue à bord Thea.
Les deux magnifiques 15 m JI, Mariska (William Fife III 1908), et le bateau amiral du Yacht Club de Monaco, Tuiga (William Fife III 1909) seront une nouvelle fois sur la ligne de départ du Centenary Trophy.
« Pour tous l’équipage de Mariska, c’est incontournable de participer au Centenary Trophy. Si nous sommes à Saint-Tropez c’est aussi pour prendre le départ de ce défi organisé par le Gstaad Yacht Club », confie Manon Bajart, capitaine de Mariska.
« On est très content de participer à cette régate tous les ans avec tous les bateaux centenaires. Le fait de partir en fonction de notre rating est vraiment une super idée, c’est un format que l’on n’a pas sur d’autres courses. Pour Tuiga, c’est bien, nous avons tous nos concurrents devant et nous devons tous faire pour les rattraper, souvent c’est l’inverse pour nous », ajoute Daniel Pereira, capitaine de Tuiga.
Le départ sera donné jeudi 3 octobre à 12h30 pour le premier bateau.
Lulu (1897) sera une nouvelle fois le plus âgé des centenaires à prendre le départ alors que le tout juste centenaire Arrow (1924) sera le plus jeune.
« Swiss night », place des Lices
Mercredi 2 octobre, c’est place des Lices que tous les concurrents ont rendez-vous pour la « Swiss night ». Pour la troisième année, Le Gstaad Yacht Club met la Suisse à l’honneur à Saint-Tropez. Au programme : dégustation de spécialités des Alpes et activités très suisses… une compétition de « traite de vaches » et une course inédite de ski….
Le Trophée
Le Trophée du Centenary Trophy, remis chaque année pendant le diner des propriétaires, est également centenaire, il a été créé par Wakely and Wheeler à Londres en 1911, soit exactement 100 ans avant la première édition de la régate.
Le « Centenarian Award »
Le prix du centenaire « Centenarian Award » de l’année, organisé par le magazine Classic Boat et le Gstaad Yacht Club, a été créé en 2017. Tous les bateaux de 100 ans et plus, qui naviguent encore sont éligibles. Chaque bateau doit avoir réalisé quelque chose d’important au cours de l’année écoulée, qu’il s’agisse d’une longue croisière, d’une victoire en course, d’une restauration majeure ou de tout autre événement remarquable.
Le gagnant est annoncé lors de la cérémonie annuelle des Classic Boat Awards, qui se tient au Royal Thames Yacht Club de Londres, le vainqueur reçoit une coupe en argent, offert par Robbe & Berking. La coupe, réalisée dans le style Bauhaus (1919-1933), incarne une simplicité exprimée par des matériaux précieux avec une esthétique épurée et moderne.
Le vainqueur de l’édition 2023 est Barbara (1923), conçu en 1923 par Charles Ernest Nicholson et construit au chantier naval Camper & Nicholsons de Gosport, au Royaume-Uni, il navigue actuellement sous pavillon italien.

Le Gstaad Yacht Club a été fondé en 1998 par un groupe de marin passionné avec pour mission de « créer un yacht club unique et global loin de l’eau et non pas un autre yacht club local près de la mer ». La Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez
