“Rookie centenarian” Olympian wins the 4th Gstaad Yacht Club’s Centenary Trophy
A gentle breeze, warm sun, blue skies. One couldn’t have asked for better weather conditions for the fourth edition of the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy, the true rendez-vous for the oldest boats of the classic yachts circuit and the focal point of classic racing at the Voiles the Saint-Tropez, hosting event of the regatta.
For the fourth consecutive year the Centenary Trophy gathered one hundred years and more old yachts that competed with an especially created handicap system in a pursuit race. The Race Committee set the race area on a 7 mile long costal course, with the first start signal fired at around 12:30 in 8 to 10 knots of wind. After some three hours, the first boat to cross the line, just off the St Tropez breakwater, crowded with hundreds of spectators, was Philippe Oddo’s Olympian skippered by Bruno Troublé. The very competitive P Class gaff cutter, at her first participation to the Centenary was then declared the winner of the Trophy, to the utmost delight of her crew.
“This Centenary Trophy is a very special regatta, the pursuit format is great. We had to start late due to our rating and sailing among the fleet of centenarians was simply wonderful. One after the other, we managed to take over our competitors and got in front, crossing the line in first.” Said Bruno Troublé as he docked in the St Tropez harbour.
Yet, Olympian was not the only newcomer to display excellent speed performance. Second placed Silhouette, was also participating to the regatta for the first time, but as her owner Daniel Heine declared she will be back in the future: “We were told by our Commodore, that there is no second so we have to come back next year. Many thanks to all who made this fantastic race possible – we look forward to the 2015 edition.”
During the prize-giving ceremony Peter Erzberger, Commodore of the Gstaad Yacht Club announced an important initiative. The Club has in fact decided to launch the Centenary Trophy Register© of the centenarians with the aim of gathering information, details and news on the existing fleet.

The Gstaad Yacht Club was founded in 1998 by a group of sailor enthusiasts with the vision to “create a unique global yacht club away from the waters, instead of another local club by the waters”. Since 20th December 2003 the GYC has its own clubhouse with 400 members from over 20 different countries. In the beginning very often noticed with some sort of astonishment – the GYC developed to be a place where members and their guests love to meet. The GYC, although a club in the mountains without water, supports sailing projects on all levels from juniors to professional sailors. In the meantime it as well has become a solid force on the Swiss sailing scene and especially among the classic yachts.
Le «bizuth centenaire» Olympian remporte la 4ème édition du Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy
Une légère brise, soleil et ciel bleu, on ne pouvait pas rêver de meilleures conditions météo pour la quatrième édition du Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy, le rendez-vous des yachts les plus anciens du circuit, le point d’orgue des Classique pendant Voiles de Saint-Tropez qui accueille la régate.
Pour la quatrième année, le centenary Trophy a rassemblé les yachts de plus de cent ans. Au programme du Centenary Trophy : un parcours côté de 7 milles dans 8-10 noeuds de vent. A 12h30, le Comité de Course a donné le premier départ et après environ trois heures de course, le premier bateau à franchir la ligne, devant la digue de Saint-Tropez où de nombreux spectateurs étaient présents, a été Olympian de Philippe Oddo, skippé par Bruno Troublé. Pour sa première participation au Centenary Trophy, le Class P était alors déclaré vainqueur du Trophée pour la plus grande joie de son équipage.
« Le Centenary Trophy est une régate vraiment spéciale, le format de poursuit-race est exceptionnel. Nous sommes partis en retard en raison de notre rating. La navigation avec la flotte des centenaires était tout simplement merveilleuse. L’un après l’autre, nous avons réussi à passer tous nos concurrents pour franchir la ligne d’arrivée en premier» raconte Bruno Troublé lors de son amarrage dans le port de Saint-Tropez.
Olympian n’a pas été le seul nouveau venu à afficher d’excellentes performances de vitesse. A la deuxième place Silhouette, participait également à la régate pour la première fois, et sa propriétaire Daniel Heine a déclaré qu’elle sera de retour l’an prochain: «Il n’y a pas de deuxième qui compte donc nous sommes obligés de revenir en 2015. Un grand merci à tous ceux qui ont fait cette course fantastique, nous nous réjouissons de revenir pour l’édition 2015 ».
Lors de la cérémonie de remise des prix Peter Erzberger, Commodore du Gstaad Yacht Club a annoncé une initiative importante. Le club a en effet décidé de créer le Centenary Trophy Register©, un registre des bateaux centenaires dans le but de recueillir des informations et des nouvelles de la flotte.
