The Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy Returns for its 14th Edition

 The Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy returns for its 14th edition on Thursday, October 2nd, as part of the prestigious Voiles de Saint-Tropez.
Nearly twenty centenarian yachts, true floating gems, will set off in a one-of-a-kind regatta, exclusively reserved for these legends of the seas.

Out on the water, the spectacle promises to be breathtaking. With their majestic lines, these century-old sailboats will deliver stunning downwind runs under spinnaker and bold comebacks, where every maneuver will showcase skill and elegance.

The day before, on Wednesday, October 1st, the Gstaad Yacht Club will kick off the festivities on land with the “Swiss Night,” organized for the third consecutive year at Place des Lices.

Centenarian yachts of rare elegance are preparing to compete in a unique race.

As every year since its creation in 2011, the Centenary Trophy will follow the “pursuit race” format: each yacht starts at a specific time determined by its rating. The first to cross the finish line in front of the Tour du Portalet is declared the winner. This format puts all competitors on an equal footing and guarantees suspense right up to the finish line.

“This isn’t our first time participating in the Centenary Trophy. We’ve taken part for several years, but last year we had to withdraw at the last minute—our mast broke the day before the race. Today, we’re thrilled to be back in top form. The race format is truly fantastic. We were just talking about it again this morning with the whole crew during the briefing: it’s a completely different kind of event. Of course, the age of the boats gives it a unique character, but the staggered start system also sets it apart—it’s a format I much prefer over the usual ones. With so many yachts gathered here, a traditional race format just wouldn’t work. That’s why we look forward to every edition of the Centenary Trophy,” says Torsten Oemus, owner of Sky.

The race will begin on Thursday, October 2nd at 12:30 PM with the first yacht setting off.

Sky (built in 1890) will be the oldest centenarian yacht in the fleet, while the just-turned-100 Q-Class Leonore (built in 1925) will be the youngest, boasting a legendary crew onboard.

“This year, Leonore turns 100. It’s incredible to sail on such a centenarian yacht, a true witness to a century of history. The crew is made up of long-time friends—some of us have known each other for over forty years, since the 1983 America’s Cup in Newport. We have such chemistry that sometimes there’s no need to speak to understand each other. Alongside us are young sailors who’ve quickly embraced the spirit of the boat and integrated seamlessly. Among the crew are former members of the legendary Azzurra team: Daniele Gabrielli, Rico Passoni, Luca Chiarello, and Mauro Piani. As for me, I’ll be at the helm.

Sailing a centenarian yacht is an immense privilege, and the race format is something the whole crew loves. Seeing the finish line in real-time adds an exciting, dynamic edge to the regatta,” shares Mauro Pelaschier, Italian sailing legend and former helmsman of Azzurra, the first Italian yacht to compete in the America’s Cup in 1983.

“Swiss Night” at Place des Lices – A Taste of the Alps in the Heart of Saint-Tropez

On Wednesday, October 1st, Place des Lices will take on a distinctly Swiss atmosphere for the now-iconic “Swiss Night”, a festive highlight of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. For the third consecutive year, the Gstaad Yacht Club will celebrate Swiss heritage with a warm and spirited evening blending tradition and camaraderie.

Crews and guests will enjoy Alpine culinary specialties brought directly from Switzerland, setting the stage for an evening filled with unexpected and entertaining activities. Highlights include a whimsical “cow milking” contest and a light-hearted ski race—held right in the heart of the Saint-Tropez village—bringing a playful mountain spirit to the Riviera.

A Trophy With a Story

The Centenary Trophy, awarded each year during the Owners’ Dinner, carries historical significance of its own. Originally crafted in 1911 by renowned London silversmiths Wakely and Wheeler, the trophy is itself a centenarian—created exactly 100 years before the first edition of the regatta was launched in 2011. A fitting emblem for a race celebrating the enduring elegance of yachts over a century old.

Gstaad Yacht Club

The Gstaad Yacht Club (GYC) was founded in 1998 by a group of sailing enthusiasts with the vision of creating “a unique, global yacht club off the water, instead of another local club on the water”. Located in the Swiss Alpes, and initially often met with astonishment, the Gstaad Yacht Club has developed into a club with 400 members from over 40 different countries and a place where members and their guests enjoy meeting. The annual events calendar hosts a variety of social, sport and sailing events organized by a passionate crew of three together with 10 volunteering Board and Committee members is organizing up to 90 event occasion days per year. The network of reciprocal clubs has extended over all continents.

The Gstaad Yacht Club supports sailing projects at all levels, from juniors to professional sailors, and has become a permanent fixture on the Swiss sailing scene, particularly in Olympic sailing and classic yachting.

Since 2011, topics relating to the protection of the oceans and waters as well as other themes relating to sustainability and the well-being of our environment have been an integral part of club life, enriched by collaborations and events such as with Sylvia Earle, the Blue Marine Foundation, IUCN Ocean Ambassador William Winram and the Gstaad Cultural Encounters.

Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez
Founded in 1862, the SNST has been organizing regattas for over 160 years. Legendary figures like Guy de Maupassant (1887) and Paul Signac (1897, President from 1908 to 1911) were early pioneers of French yachting and members of the club.
Affiliated with FFVoile and a partner of the Yacht Club de France, the SNST continues to evolve while honoring tradition.
With a passionate team of 15 board members, 3 permanent staff, 500 members, and many volunteers, the club organizes major events such as Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, Festival ArMeN, Dames de Saint-Tropez, Les Voiles d’Automne, Paprec 600 Saint-Tropez, and co-hosts the Loro Piana Giraglia in Saint-Tropez.

Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy,

Une 14ᵉ édition qui s’annonce tonique !

Le Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy revient pour sa 14ᵉ édition le jeudi 2 octobre, dans le cadre prestigieux des Voiles de Saint-Tropez. Près de vingt yachts centenaires, véritables joyaux flottants, s’élanceront pour une régate unique au monde, réservée à ces légendes des mers.

Sur l’eau, le spectacle promet d’être à couper le souffle. Avec leurs lignes majestueuses, les voiliers centenaires offriront des belles glissades sous spi et des remontadas audacieuses, où chaque manœuvre sera une démonstration de maîtrise et de grâce.

La veille, mercredi 1ᵉʳ octobre, le Gstaad Yacht Club lancera les festivités à terre avec la « Swiss Night », organisée pour la troisième année consécutive sur la place des Lices.

Des yachts centenaires d’une élégance rare s’apprêtent à s’affronter dans une course unique. Comme chaque année depuis sa création en 2011, le Centenary Trophy adoptera le format de la « pursuit race » : chaque voilier prend le départ à une heure précise déterminée par son rating. Le premier à franchir la ligne d’arrivée en face de la Tour du Portalet est déclaré vainqueur. Ce principe permet aux concurrents de régater sur un pied d’égalité et garantit un suspense jusqu’au franchissement de la ligne d’arrivée.

« Ce n’est pas notre première participation au Centenary Trophy. Nous y participons depuis quelques années, mais l’an dernier nous avions dû renoncer au dernier moment, notre mât ayant cassé la veille de la course. Aujourd’hui, nous sommes heureux de revenir en pleine forme. Le format de la régate est vraiment fantastique. Nous en parlions encore ce matin avec tout l’équipage lors du briefing : c’est une épreuve totalement différente des autres. Bien sûr, l’âge des bateaux lui donne un caractère unique, mais le système de départ aussi, que je préfère largement aux formats habituels. Avec autant de voiliers rassemblés ici, il serait impossible de courir de façon classique. Nous attendons donc chaque édition du Centenary Trophy avec impatience », confie Torsten Oemus, propriétaire de Sky.

Le départ sera donné jeudi 2 octobre à 12h30 pour le premier bateau.

Sky (1890) sera le plus âgé des centenaires à prendre le départ alors que le Q-Class tout juste centenaire Leonore (1925) sera le plus jeune, avec à son bord un équipage de légendes.

« Cette année, Leonore fête ses 100 ans. C’est incroyable de naviguer sur un tel voilier centenaire, véritable témoin d’un siècle d’histoire. À bord, l’équipage est composé d’amis de longue date : certains d’entre nous se connaissent depuis plus de quarante ans, depuis la Coupe de l’America à Newport en 1983. Nous avons une telle complicité qu’il n’y a parfois même pas besoin de parler pour se comprendre. À nos côtés, nous avons également de jeunes marins qui ont su rapidement s’imprégner de l’esprit du bateau et s’intégrer parfaitement. Parmi l’équipage figurent d’anciens membres de la légendaire équipe d’Azurra : Daniele Gabrielli, Rico Passoni, Luca Chiarello et Mauro Piani, Pour ma part, je serais à la barre. Naviguer sur un voilier centenaire reste un immense privilège, et le format de la course plaît beaucoup à l’équipage. On apprécie de voir l’arrivée en temps réel, ce qui rend la régate encore plus vivante et stimulante », raconte la légende de la voile italienne Mauro Pelaschier, barreur de Azzura, premier voilier italien à s’aligner à l’America’s Cup en 1983.

 « Swiss night », place des Lices

Mercredi 1er octobre, la place des Lices prendra des allures helvétiques avec la « Swiss Night », rendez-vous festif incontournable des Voiles de Saint-Tropez. Pour la troisième année, le Gstaad Yacht Club mettra la Suisse à l’honneur, entre convivialité et traditions. Les équipages pourront déguster des spécialités venues tout droit des Alpes, avant de se prêter à des animations aussi insolites que ludiques : une compétition de « traite de vaches » et une course de ski décalée en plein cœur du village tropézien.

Le Trophée

Le Trophée du Centenary Trophy, remis chaque année pendant le diner des propriétaires, est également centenaire. Ce dernier a été créé par Wakely and Wheeler à Londres en 1911, soit exactement 100 ans avant la première édition de la régate.

Gstaad Yacht Club

Le Gstaad Yacht Club a été fondé en 1998 par un groupe de marin passionné avec pour mission de « créer un yacht club unique et global loin de l’eau et non pas un autre yacht club local près de la mer ». La Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez

Fondée en 1862, la Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez organise des régates depuis plus de 160 ans. Certains de ses membres ont laissé une trace impérissable à l’image de Guy de Maupassant en 1887 et Paul Signac en 1897 (Président de la SNST de 1908 à 1911) qui font partie des pionniers de la plaisance française. Affiliée à la FFVoile et Club allié du Yacht Club de France, la SNST n’a cessé de s’agrandir avec comme leitmotiv de toujours être ouverte à la modernité et aux nouveautés tout en respectant la tradition. Fort d’une équipe de passionnés dont 15 membres du Conseil d’Administration, 3 permanents, 500 membres et de nombreux bénévoles, le Club organise de grandes épreuves dont les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, le Festival ArMeN, les Dames de Saint-Tropez, les Voiles d’automne ou la course au large en Mediterranée, la Paprec 600 Saint-Tropez et co-organise d’autres épreuves comme la Loro Piana Giraglia à Saint-Tropez.
